As a club, Pour Standards has done multiple, charitable events in 2014. Beginning with the hugely successful “Brew for Autism”, back in January, which raised over $9000 for Autism Speaks, a National charity with many branches across the country. Then, turning our eye a bit more locally, there was the “Just Foods NYC: Chicken Project”, for which I had the bright idea to mimic a deviled egg with a beer. Doh!!
We’ll also be pouring our beer at a fundraiser for the Alice Austen house, a Staten Island staple and popular destination for bike riders and tourists, drawn to the beautiful 19th Century house overlooking the water. The former residence of an early, female photographer. Two of our members, Doug and Sean also donated 5 gallons of an award-winning Oyster Stout for the Billion Oyster Project, which was auctioned off and brought a pretty penny toward repopulating NY’s bay with oysters, as was commonplace a century ago.
But now that we’ve given so freely, from our members’ pockets and our club funds, we’ve been left with no money. That means that we wouldn’t be able to continue doing fundraisers for non-profits, which we all hold so dear.
Enter, PourMania ’14!!!
On September 6th, we’re holding a fundraiser for the club. These funds will enable us to raise more money and awareness this year, and next, for causes that need it. Through beer (yes, beer) we have raised over $13,000 for non-profits in the past 12 months, and this time we’re making beer for our supporters, and the Pour Standards home brewers are pulling out all the stops.
The line-up is an insane list of unique beers. Just to name a few; Chocolate Chai Stout, Peanut Butter & Jelly Porter, a dill & cilantro beer, Rye IPA with Szechuan Peppercorns, saisons, short meads, cider…oh my!
But in keeping with our focus, this really isn’t not about us, it’s about being able to continue our charitable work, so we’ve decided to donate 10% of the proceeds to Louie’s Legacy Animal Rescue. A rescue agency which began on Staten Island, and although the founder has since moved to Ohio, they still have a strong presence in our hometown. Animals don’t have a choice. They don’t get parole or visitation rights. They sit in a cage until that cage is needed for a newer animal, and then they get killed. Louie’s Legacy rescues these animals and finds temporary foster homes for them, until a forever home can be found to adopt them. This is just the type of agency that Pour standards is committed to helping.
Please come to our fundraiser, PourMania on Sept 6 at 120 Bay Cafe. Support your community Non-Profit Homebrew club, support the artistry and culinary acumen of Staten Island residents, give a dog or cat a fighting chance, and have a great time locally.
What you’ll get for just a $25 donation, is over 15 beers + other fermented beverages, from 1-5pm. There will be NO stamping of cards to keep track, and we’re limiting tickets sales to just 100, in order to ensure the best experience for our friends that attend.
